Many people feel uncomfortable during a heat wave and are less able to function as normal. This is because high temperatures and heat waves can put a lot of strain on the body. On this page we give you tips and advice on how to protect yourself from heat and prevent heat stress.

Please note: The physical stress caused heat is experienced differently by every individual, so not all tips make sense for everyone. Decide for yourself what helps you.

General tips for protection against heat

  • Drink enough and drink throughout the day: water, unsweetened teas or fruit spritzers are suitable. Avoid alcohol.
  • Make sure you get enough electrolytes from mineral water and food.
  • Eat several small light meals. Avoid fatty foods.
  • Keep the apartment cool: close shutters or curtains during the day. Ventilate at night and in the cool morning hours. Close windows as soon as it gets warm outside.
  • Refrain from working with emitted heat, e.g. baking, ironing, blow-drying.
  • Avoid direct sunlight.
  • If possible, do not spend time outside during the hottest time of the day.
  • Look for shady, cool places.
  • Wear light, airy clothing in light colours.
  • Cool down with damp cloths or foot baths. Use sun protection with a high sun protection factor. Wear a sun hat and sunglasses.
  • Adjust your daily schedule: move physical activities and errands to the cooler morning and later evening hours. Sign up for heat warnings from the Deutscher Wetterdienst
  • Look after your fellow human beings: children, the elderly or the homeless, in particular, could need your help.
