Unhoused people

A bench in a city, on which a person is lying. Only the persons shoes and legs are visible.

Homeless people are often defenceless against the heat: they have no opportunities to retreat to a cool space, have limited access to drinking water, no suitable clothing and no sun protection. Homeless people also often have pre-existing health problems and little medical care. In addition, symptoms such as confusion or light-headedness in homeless people are easily overlooked or mistakenly equated with alcohol or drug use. This is why special vigilance and caring action are needed.

Heat protection

Here’s how you can help homeless people protect themselves from the heat:

  • Talk to the person and ask if they need help.
  • Actively offer drinking water, shade and information.
  • Offer sunscreen.
  • Point out drinking fountains and cool places in the area.
  • Help them get access to cooling, sun protection, and medical assistance.
  • Contact mobile help teams or street workers if they are available locally.
  • Look for warning signs and symptoms such as confusion, hot skin, exhaustion. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, get help directly, e.g. call the emergency services on 112.
